Aims of the Funding Initiative

The Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience is the central funding initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Reserach (BMBF) under the lead vision entitled 'Understanding Thought'.

The Network was established with the aim of structurally interconnecting and developing regional capacities and knowledge in the field of Computational Neuroscience. It combines excellent neuroscientific expertise with theoretical approaches.

The existing potential in the theoretical and experimental neurosciences is used to induce new reseach impulses and stimulate innovative potential concentrating and exploiting neuroscientific knowledge. Specifically, the Bernstein Network aism at establishing the scientific discipline of Computational Neuroscience in Germany, making it internationally visible and linking it to approaches leading to technological applications. Connections to technical and biomedical applications as well as research on learning and knowledge from neuroinformatics are integrated into the Network.

The Network consists of local research centers and groups and is complemented by nationwide cooperations. Network Partners are mutually connected by exchange of data, analysis methods, computer models and theoretical approaches. Teaching and training of young researchers and integrating the discipline 'Computational Neuroscience' into University education by establishing interdisciplinary training programs constitutes a central element of the Bernstein Network.
