"Unravel CNS Regeneration - From Fact Extraction to Experimental Design"

The suffering and tragedy associated with regeneration failure of the central nervous system (CNS) has spurred medical research. Unraveling these processes is difficult due to complex system behavior. The complexity is based upon relationships between the participating proteins and protein pathways, which are not only time- but also spatial-dependent.  Due to the lack of such knowledge we will perform proteomics experiments, meaning decoding the entire protein changes that occur after spinal cord injury.

In collaboration with Kai Stühler from the Molecular Proteomics Laboratory of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf we will analyze tissue from rat spinal cords with the latest techniques available in proteomics. In collaboration with the University of Colorado a generic knowledge-based system developed by the Hunter group, called Hanalyzer, will be modified to our specific problem of regeneration failure. Furthermore, extensive text and data mining on publications and databases relevant to CNS regeneration will be conducted by Kevin Cohen (University of Colorado) to generate the first computer-based protein interaction and functional model in the neurobiology domain. Such a model will provide us with the advantage to design hypothesis-driven experiments based upon the entire information collected in the literature and databases.

This interdisciplinary team of researchers holds promise to shed light on the entire processes leading to regeneration failure. As the result this novel strategy potentially provides aid for many patients worldwide to improve their quality of life.
