New insights on vision, ERC Grant for Tim Gollisch

2 Million Euro for research on the processing capabilities of biological vision systems. European Research Council will fund the research of Professor Tim Gollisch for five years.

Prof. Dr. Tim Gollisch, head of the research group on experimental retina research at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) receives high level funding of the European Research Council (ERC). With the ERC Consolidator Grant, Professor Gollisch has about 2 million Euro at his disposal to finance his research project „CODE4Vision“, which focuses on investigating the nerve cells of the retina.

These nerve cells form the basis of our sense of sight. The goal of the research project is to better understand the connectivity and the functionality of retinal nerve cells. In the long run, these insights might help to partially re-establish sight by means of artificially stimulating the nerve cells when the photoreceptors in the eye have died of illness. The “Code4Vision” project starts on June 1, 2017. It is funded for five years.
